Chontilla
Chontilla is a plant fiber extracted from the chontaduro palm, a species native to the tropical forests of South America. Appreciated for its strength and flexibility, it is traditionally used by indigenous communities for basketry and the making of handicrafts. After harvesting, the palm leaves are dried, thinned, and prepared into fine strands that can be used in their natural color or dyed with plant pigments. This fiber is often combined with other materials such as cumare or guarinsy to create unique pieces, where each weave reflects ancestral know-how passed down from generation to generation.
