Esparto
Esparto is a perennial grass native to the dry regions of southern Iberia and North Africa. It is also widely used and cultivated in the Boyacá region of Colombia, where it holds cultural significance. This resilient plant thrives in arid and rocky soils, characterized by its grey-green leaves that take on a golden hue when dried. Traditionally, esparto fibers are used to create a variety of handicrafts.
They are particularly prized for their robustness and flexibility, making them ideal for making baskets, ropes, bags and other household items. Artisans master weaving and sewing techniques to transform this material into unique and durable pieces, which combine aesthetics and functionality.
